What is an IP address?
Every computer that communicates over the Internet is assigned an Internet Protocol (IP) address that uniquely identifies the device and distinguishes it from other computers on the Internet. These addresses are typically called 'public IP addresses'. Since there is a finite number of public IP addresses, a couple of ranges of private IP addresses have been designated and are used for creating private networks and sharing the public ip address space.
What is the difference between static and dynamic IP addresses?
A static IP address is an IP address that is assigned to a device manually and is intended to be its permanent address on the private network or Internet. Dynamic IP addressing, or DHCP, is an automatic way to manage IP addresses and may provide a different IP address each time you connect to the network or Internet.
Can I get a Static IP address with my Clearband wireless connection?
All Clearband business and residential customers can receive a Static IP Address at minimal cost.
Can I get more than one static IP address with my Clearband wireless connection?
Yes, for an additional charge.
What is Broadband Telephone Service?
Broadband Telephone Service is telephone service that operates over your broadband Internet connection instead of the typical copper line from your local telephone company. It utlizes a packet based protocol instead of the telephone company's switch based protocol.
What equipment do I need to use Broadband Telephone Service?
You will need a broadband Internet connection, preferrably a Clearband Internet connection, and a normal analog telephone. We will provide you with an adapter that connects your telephone to your broadband Internet connection.
Can I transfer my existing telephone number to Clearband?
Yes, we do port (transfer) telephone numbers from other service providers. In order for us to be able to port numbers from other providers you will need to fill out the Letter of Authorization form giving us permission to port your telephone number. Also, you must stay connected with your current telephone service to hold the number you want ported. On average, this process may take 15-30 business days, however it can take longer. You will be assigned a temporary number, which will then be replaced once your desired number has been ported. During this time, you may be paying two phone bills at one time.
Will Clearband contact my current telephone company to cancel my service with them?
No, only you can cancel your current telphone service. We will either assign you a new telephone number or port your current telephone number that will work over your broadband Internet connection, but you will be responsible for making any changes to your existing telephone service, if you so desire. You can use your Clearband number and your legacy telephone service at the same time, if you wish.
Can I use your telephone service with a dial up Internet connection?
No, you will not be able to use it with a dial up connection as the service requires more bandwidth (higher speed) than your dial up service can provide.
Is the adaptor I need to use your service included in the service plans?
Yes, it is included and remains the property of Clearband. There is no need to sell the adapter as it can only be used with Clearband's service.
Does Clearband's telephone service support FAX machines, Modems, TIVO boxes, or Satelite TV boxes?
Due to inherent difficulties with Internet technology today, faxing and home security systems are not 100% reliable. Because of this, Clearband recommends it not be used as a primary fax line. However, Clearband is currently developing a solution that will make both of these services reliable as your standard phone line. This service does not support TIVO, Satelite TV, home security systems, or any other application that uses a dial up modem.
Can a cellular telephone number be ported?
Yes, we can port cellular telephone number for a one time porting fee.
